Opportunities for Metalworking in Plastics Industry
During 2020, a year in which the global economy was affected invariably, several earnings were also generated for some industrial markets: plastics among them; this fact is in contrast to the majority of other industrial sectors that have reported loss. According to the engineer Venancio Pérez Gómez, president of Clúster de Plásticos de Querétaro (Plastics Cluster Querétaro), specifically the packaging industry had a magnificent momentum, due to the risks associated with the pandemic, many types of products were distributed in packaging, generating a favorable context for this sector and at the same time contributing to maintaining isolated and clean environments.
This positive environment for plastics in Mexico has been added to the latent projection that there will be new plants specialized in the manufacturing of plastic parts in the country, derived from the fact that Mexico is considered a global bastion of the automotive industry with a participation of 16% of manufacturing GDP, of course entirely originated from this item alone. Taking as a reference that the cars have approximately 400 kilos of components made of this material, the importance of this sector at the national level can then be measured.
In addition, the plastics sector converges productively with the metalworking sector, since in Mexico there are only 50 mold manufacturers; and when a producer of plastic pieces and engineering automotive components requires a mold, they are imported from Europe or Asia as they do not have this type of tooling in the country. Not to mention the innumerable variety of plastic products that require a mold.
The president of the Plastics Cluster maintains that plastic is an essential product in our daily life, since it is integrated into all our activities and in all the products we use and handle. The importance of the Plastic Cluster is palpable in all areas, as this association is made up of companies that produce for the agricultural, food, electrical appliances, medical, and electrical industries, among others.
“The opportunities of the metalworking industry on plastic is magnificent, since to make a plastic we need a mold, this mold is manufactured of steel, then we require metal, of every molds we have in México, easily 65% or more than those, are not manufactured in here, so we give us an idea of how many opportunities we would have to manufacture molds in here, it means hundred million dollars, it is a very strong industry caused by all facts around it, since the creationg, maintenance, updating, so the mold manufacturing and diez is a big opportunity for metalworking industry”, concluded the engineer Venancio Pérez.
“The opportunities of the metalworking industry in plastic is magnificent, since to make a plastic product we need a mold, the mold is made of steel, so we require metal, of all the molds we have in Mexico, easily 65% of most of these molds are not made in Mexico, that gives us an idea of the opportunity we would have to manufacture molds here, there are hundreds of billions of dollars, it is a fairly strong industry for everything that molds imply, since the creation, maintenance, updating, so the manufacture of molds and dies is a huge opportunity for the metalworking industry ”, concluded engineer Venancio Pérez.
